Sunday was surprisingly sunny. but alas! didn't manage to wake up early for a bike and run leg. so after some grocery shopping, headed for a 9km mid-afternoon run with some 200m slopes. like the sun but hate the humidity. and did it in sub 50min.
Anyway, back to the topic on cyclist. recently, there has been a lot of writing in the papers on the peril and irresponsibility of cyclists and/or drivers. I think enough have been said, I just wanna share some observations from my recent melb trip and as a cyclist and driver.
all thru-out the city of melb even to the sub-urb, special cyclist lanes will designed and drawn along the roads, they even have cycling lanes that run parallel to the freeways. one might say they have space and that we really have a constraints of space in this little dot country of ours. Personally, I think we shld stop always using this constraints as a reason for not able to cater to cyclists. If we are really commited to cutting down CO2 emission, start with the no of cars (though the renumeration of COEs and road taxes is really substantial for our nation's coffers). And one way is to encourage cycling by making our roads safer for cyclists.
On a similar note, having park connectors throughout the country is a right move. but I must say, for people to commute to work thru cycling via the park connectors is really inconvenient. so, having specially designated lanes for cyclists still work better.
Of course, the other aspect would be the education of our drivers and our cyclists. Having been cycling on roads for a number of years (involved in an accident which one car just suddenly turned out), I must say our drivers are generally unfriendly to cyclists. However, I have also seen cyclists disregard any basic traffic rules and put the rest of our cyclists in the bad light.
Let's be patient with ourselves and with fellow road users (be it cars or cyclists) and be safe.
Hope the rain can stop and I can do some cycling later.
