What is loss?

Currently out of school attending a course on coping with grief and loss. It trains one to provide support for those who are experiencing grief and loss... loss is not necessary pertaining to death.

Very good course, trainer was a seasoned social worker and counsellor. Through th discussions and sharings, it was v humbling and broadens my perspective and outlook about counselling. It also make me reflect on what I have gone thru in terms of my own grief and losses.

Grief is a natural healing process as a result of the loss we suffered

Our worlds change when our experiences change

what struck a deep chord in me is what the trainer said, "for a long time, we always said that we must be objective in counselling, must empathise with those we wanted to help. but what really is empathy?"

"Empathy is not just abt our cognitive/intellectual aspect when we try to rationalise or hypothesise how the one we want to help feel, more importantly, there is the emotional aspect, the heart. and the only way we can really empathise is when we go through the same experience." This is not easy, becos we might not be able to go thru many of these experiences, we only can draw from our own emotional memory banks and approximate.

So really, helping others is a calling, is about healing the heart and this will demand a lot from us, both from our emotional bank and our cognitive experiences.

which parallels what i said in my earlier entries, education is abt the heart.

on another note, training so far is ok
