I was catching up on newspapers today and came across this article by Joanne Lee in ST under Review p A24 on Sat, it talks about how facebook, esp the status update (the one liner kindaf tagline) can destroy lives. She related how a london truck driver murdered his wife after she changed her facebook status to "single" becos he was humiliated by his estranged wife's update after moving out of their house. And there was another horrific incident in May this yr when an american murdered his wife and killed himself becos his wife updated her facebook status, she was currently splitting from him, and even added this phrase, "been married for 16 years but together from 26!!!!! God that makes me sound old." So their 2 daughters become orphans. she also gave instances but less horrific in magnitude.
She concluded by saying, " given all that can go wrong with these troublesome Facebook one-liners, why do we still insist on updating them? simply put, it's to tell the world (those on our friends list anyway) what's happening in our lives and elicit a reaction from them"
how so true. i agree there is an element of show-off. even for blogging. once we put things online, we would want pple to know, expect others to respond. but then, as wat i mentioned in earlier entries, watever we put online will be up for public access and scrutiny.
I was chitchating with some peers today over coffee about how technology has such an impact on us that it becomes a habit, and how we can betta help ourselves and our students to cope with the unknowns in the technology age, without sounding preachy. tough siah. LOL
with power (in this case, power of technology) comes responsibility.
mmm... sounds moralistic, aye? LOL
oh, please tag me LOL (nothing vulgar plse)
