As I watched the live telecast of State Funeral for Dr Goh on TV and listened to the eulogies, I can't help but admire in awe and profound respect for this Great Man and his strength of character.
I shan't elaborate his great achievements again, but what captivated me the most were the eulogies by his grandson and grandniece, offering valuable insights to the personal annecdotes of his personal life.
Some quotes:
"True Greatness cannot be extinguished, no matter what circumstances of life one may face. "
"Actually, I find this camera-shy aspect of him strangely inconsistent with his life as a politician. My grandfather, being innately self-effacing and preferring to avoid the limelight, always seemed to me a little at odds with his overtly public vocation but when the time came to blaze a certain trail, he would rise to the challenge, on centre stage no less if he had to. And yet, when work was done, he would often deflect any motion of praise directed towards him. His unassuming facility is something I feel we sometimes lack in an age where self-promotion has become an accepted tenet of society."
"In working life, first and foremost, what you need to be is a reliable and responsible person. At first, you may be given some tasks to complete; later in your career you will be setting these tasks yourself as you rise through management. Whichever the case, you must always be a person others can count on to do a good job, whether the end result is successful or not."
"Knowledge is not a loose-leaf notebook of facts. Above all, it is a responsibility for the integrity of what we are, primarily of what we are as ethical creatures. The personal commitment of a man to his skill, the intellectual commitment and the emotional commitment working together as one, has made the Ascent of Man" The Ascent of Man-Dr Jacob Bronowski
