did 11 km tempo run last evening (since now it is wee hours of fri, TGIF woohoo..8-)) at ECP. did a negative split after the U turn, was running at 4min45 for 5 km. woosh! every shiok. but the issue is, this run kept me wide awake until now.
Just finished the whole mediacorp series of 书包太重 on MobTV. ending abit predictable and didatic. but anyway, there was this protagonist who was bent on setting up elite classes for tuition centre and only those that can meet her stringent criteria can be enrolled. So there were many instances in which the students who missed the cut off by one or two points and were rejected. of course, eventually, as all shows with good ending, she realised her approach is not sound.
This sparked me to reflect on certain issues and phenomenon that exists in our own education system. This whole issue of DSA and how some schs insisted on getting the best students in to ensure good "raw" materials so that results can be delivered. Is there anything wrong? I would say it depends on the perspective and the focus we are taking.
Personally, as an educator, i believe that the quality of the "raw" material (in this case, I mean the quality of students) only plays a small part and we must not be overconsumed by this. Every child is unique and their starting points will be different. What is important and educationally sound is how we as educators help to value add to the whole sch experience so that they can realise their aspirations and achieve their own successes. If not, we may fall into the slippery trap of becoming elitist and overtly pragmatic, only teaching those that have good "starting points".
It will then defeat the whole purpose of being a teacher.
So to all fellow educators, Let's make a difference, a positive one, to every child that comes to us, regardless of their backgrounds.
It is a tall order but a good challenge.
gonna read my book.
